Meta has unveiled its latest innovation: AI-powered smart glasses, developed in collaboration with Ray-Ban and Oakley. The announcement came during the company’s annual Meta Connect event in Menlo Park, where CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduced the new wearable tech, positioning it as a major step forward in everyday augmented reality.

The smart glasses, called Meta Ray-Ban Display, feature a high-resolution, full-color display embedded in one lens. This allows users to view messages, receive real-time information, and make video calls without reaching for their phones. The glasses are also equipped with a 12-megapixel camera for capturing photos and videos on the go.

Zuckerberg emphasized the potential of the glasses to seamlessly integrate Meta’s artificial intelligence assistant—Meta AI—into users’ daily routines. “This is a huge scientific breakthrough,” he told the audience, highlighting the company’s goal to make AI more accessible through practical, wearable tech.

Also introduced was a neural wristband designed to work with the smart glasses. The wristband interprets subtle hand movements and gestures, allowing users to send messages or control apps with just a flick of the fingers, providing a more intuitive interface for interacting with digital content.

The launch marks a significant pivot from Meta’s heavy investment in the Metaverse, a virtual world initiative that has yet to gain widespread traction. Industry analysts suggest that smart glasses have a better chance of becoming mainstream due to their familiar, non-intrusive form factor.

“Unlike VR headsets, glasses are an everyday, non-cumbersome device,” said Mike Proulx, Vice President and Research Director at Forrester. “But Meta still needs to prove that the benefits of AI glasses justify the price and privacy concerns.”

The company’s move comes as it continues to face criticism over its platforms’ impact on users, especially children. Despite this, Meta is pushing ahead with its vision of a future where wearable AI becomes as common as smartphones.

With this launch, Meta is betting that smart glasses—once seen as futuristic novelties—can evolve into essential tools for communication, productivity, and AI integration in everyday life.
