The International Festival of the Cirque de Monte-Carlo made a dazzling return on Friday, January 16, as the 48th edition of the world-renowned circus event officially opened beneath the iconic Chapiteau de l’Espace Fontvieille. One of Monaco’s most prestigious cultural festivals, the opening night once again celebrated the very best in international circus arts, blending tradition, innovation and global excellence.
The gala opening took place in the presence of Prince Albert II and Princess Stéphanie, joined by Louis Ducruet and Camille Gottlieb, highlighting the enduring connection between the Princely Family of Monaco and a festival that has shaped the principality’s cultural legacy for nearly half a century. The evening also marked the official launch of the 13th New Generation programme, a cornerstone initiative designed to support young circus artists and ensure the future evolution of contemporary circus.
The first competition performance delivered a diverse, international line-up, featuring performers from Europe, Asia and the Americas. The carefully curated programme showcased a wide range of circus disciplines, combining physical strength, technical precision and artistic creativity. From large-scale ensemble performances to refined solo acts, the show reflected the dynamic transformation of modern circus on a global stage.
Spectators were captivated by a rich variety of acts, including aerial performances, high-level acrobatics, juggling, equestrian artistry and innovative mechanical creations. Acts focused on balance, coordination and visual storytelling added further depth to the evening. The seamless inclusion of New Generation circus acts reinforced the festival’s dual mission: preserving the heritage of classical circus while spotlighting the next generation of world-class performers.
As the festival continues, the Cirque de Monte-Carlo once again confirms its status as the ultimate benchmark for international circus excellence, drawing artists, critics and audiences from around the world to the heart of Monaco.
