A delegation from Monaco’s National Council, led by President Thomas Brezzo, participated in the 17th Conference of Presidents of Parliaments of Small European States, hosted in Malta on September 26 and 27. The conference, initiated in 2006 in Monaco, brought together representatives from nine small European nations — Andorra, Cyprus, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, and San Marino — to address shared challenges and enhance collaboration.
This year’s agenda focused on three pressing global issues: climate change, multilateralism, and migration. President Brezzo, along with Vice-President Jean-Louis Grinda and Fabrice Notari, President of the External Relations Committee, emphasized the significance of small European states advocating for their collective interests while maintaining their individual identities. Brezzo called for a unified stance in international forums, proposing new parliamentary synergies and more effective communication strategies to ensure the voices of smaller nations are heard on the global stage.
In addition to the broader discussions, Brezzo and Andorra’s President, Carles Enseñat Reig, announced the formation of a Monaco-Andorra friendship group, aimed at deepening bilateral relations. The group is expected to take effect in the coming weeks. Monaco’s delegation also held key meetings with Andorra and San Marino to discuss ongoing negotiations with the European Union. These talks included sharing strategies on conducting impact assessments to evaluate the economic and social implications of future agreements.
The conference underscored the importance of solidarity among small European states in addressing global challenges, particularly as they navigate complex issues like climate policy and international migration.
