On September 17, 2024, at the 68th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Monaco’s commitment to combating cancer was solidified when Isabelle Rosabrunetto, Director General of Monaco’s Department of External Relations and Cooperation, signed a Financing Agreement with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi. This agreement supports the ‘Rays of Hope’ initiative for the years 2024-2025, furthering Monaco’s mission to fight one of the world’s leading non-communicable diseases.
Since 2007, Monaco has been a steadfast supporter of the IAEA’s cancer-fighting efforts, particularly through the Rays of Hope initiative, which was launched in 2022. This initiative aims to establish radiotherapy units in countries that lack such facilities and to bolster existing infrastructures, thereby enhancing cancer prevention and treatment capabilities. Initially piloted in seven African nations, the program has now expanded its reach to regions in Africa, Latin America, and Asia.
Monaco’s ongoing contributions align seamlessly with the IAEA’s mission to promote the peaceful application of nuclear technology for human and economic development. Additionally, this initiative supports Sustainable Development Goal 3, which aims to ensure health and well-being for all, particularly target 3.4 that seeks to reduce premature mortality from non-communicable diseases by one-third by 2030.
With projections indicating 24 million new cancer cases annually by 2030 and approximately 70 percent of cancer-related deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries, Monaco’s financial backing is crucial in addressing this significant global public health challenge. The Principality remains committed to leveraging its resources and expertise to make a lasting impact in the fight against cancer worldwide.
